Project Icarus, founded in the Fall of '03 by the Embry-Riddle Future Space Explorers' and Developers' Society, is an attempt to bring student rocket projects to Embry-Riddle. The flagship vehicle, Icarus, is a two stage vehicle planning to set an altitude record for a university built vehicle and be the first two stage student sounding rocket to launch from a NASA facility.
Icarus will launch from NASA Wallops Island Flight Facility. It is expected to reach an altitude of 40 miles. Payload data will be retrieved during the flight, however Icarus will not be recovered once it splashes down.
Icarus is merely the first in what will hopefully be a long line of vehicles, each providing students with a hands-on rocket design and construction experience, and each pushing the envelope slightly more. The ERFSEDS Icarus Sounding Rocket Program has an eventual goal of creating a rocket that reaches space.
